Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran
Ayatollah Sayed ‘Ali Khamenei, The Office of the Supreme Leader
Islamic Republic Street – End of Shahid Keshvar Doust Street, Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran
Your Excellency: We respectfully urge you to order the immediate and unconditional release of physicist and prisoner of conscience Omid Kokabee, who is serving a ten-year sentence after he was convicted on unsubstantiated charges of “communicating with a hostile government” and receiving “illegitimate funds” following an unfair trial in a Revolutionary Court in Tehran. Omid Kokabee, who specializes in optics and photonics, and who had previously studied in Barcelona Spain, had been pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Texas, Austin when he went to Iran to visit his family. He was arrested in January 2011 when he tried to return to the U.S. While in detention in Tehran’s Evin Prison, he was held in solitary confinement, subjected to prolonged interrogations, and pressured to make a confession. His sentence was handed down in May 2012 after a trial in which no evidence was presented against him. Omid Kokabee has been imprisoned solely due to his refusal to engage in military research for the Islamic Republic of Iran and as a result of spurious charges related to his legitimate scholarly ties with academic institutions outside of Iran. Omid Kokabee was recently awarded the Andrei Sakharov Prize from the American Physical Society for “his courage in refusing to use his physics knowledge to work on projects that he deemed harmful to humanity, in the face of extreme physical and psychological pressure.”
